GEOG 492. Land Use (SS)
Three hours lecture(3).

Prerequisite: Junior or senior standing.

Study of concepts and perception of land use. Course stresses compatibility of geoecologic systems and land use.

2. Detailed Description of Content of Course

This course examines the topic of land use in the context of planning for geographical regions. Covered will be some of the theoretical and practical concepts which are connected to the general term "Land Use." Emphasis will be placed on topics such as:

(a) land-use classification;
(b) social and economic determinants of land usages
(c)land use policies and land use planning
(d) geoecologic implications of land usages

3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This is a three-hour lecture course. Although lectures by the instructor provide the basic format, classroom discussion and student participation are encouraged.

4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

The goal of the course is that:

students interested in aspects of land use planning will understand and be able to articulate the varieties and determinants of land use in the U.S.

5. Assessment Measures

Assessment of the student's success in the course is based on examinations, oral presentations, and other written assignments. Students taking this course for graduate credit will be evaluated on the basis of the above criteria and on the evaluation of an additional research paper on the theoretical foundations of one of the land use issues.
