Minutes November 21, 2003

 

Members Present: H. Terry, S. Van Patten, D. Davidson, B. Brainard, N. Okie, K. Mullet, C. Hines, T. Thomas

I.                    Minutes from October 31st, November 7th, and November 14th were all approved, noting that a SOCY/ANTH proposal from the 7th meeting needed to have a correction in a course number assignment.

II.                 New Proposals for Committee to review

 

A.     Appalachian Studies

APST.01 – Course Prerequisite Change

1.      To remove the prerequisite for APST 460/560 because the course does not contribute to students mastering the course.

2.      Proposal was supported and forwarded to Dr. Self for final approval.

 

B.     Biology – Select proposals are being held subject to receipt of the General Education signatures. They will be noted in the following.

BIOL.01 – Course Title Change

1.      To change the course title of BIOL 390 from Environmental Biology to Conservation Biology.

2.      Proposal was supported and forwarded to Dr. Self for final approval.

BIOL.02 – Course Prerequisite Change

1.      To change the prerequisites for BIOL 390 from BIOL 101:102 to BIOL 121:122 and 8 credits of Biology.

2.      Proposal was supported and forwarded to Dr. Self for final approval

BIOL.03 – Course Prerequisite Change

1.      To change the prerequisite for BIOL 353 from PSYC 121, BIOL 102 or BIOL 122 to PSCY 121 and 8 credits of Biology.

2.      Proposal was supported and forwarded to Dr. Self for final approval.

BIOL.04 – Course Prerequisite Change

1.      To change the prerequisite for BIOL 392 from BIOL 121:122 or permission of instructor and 2 semesters of Chemistry to 8 credits of Biology and 8 credits of Chemistry, or permission of instructor.

2.      Proposal was supported and forwarded to Dr. Self for final approval.

BIOL.05 – Course Prerequisite Change

1.      To change the prerequisites for BIOL 450 from CHEM 302 and either BIOL/CHEM 471 or BIOL 341 and BIOL 345 to CHEM 302 and either BIOL 221:222 or BIOL.CHEM 471.

2.      Proposal was supported and forwarded to Dr. Self for final approval.

BIOL.06 – Course Prerequisite Change

1.      To change the prerequisites for BIOL 371, 462, 464, and 475 from BIOL 121:122 to 8 credits of Biology.  This proposal also changed the prerequisites for BIOL 423 from BIOL 121:122 and a STAT course, to 8 credits of Biology and a STAT course.

2.      Proposal was supported and forwarded to Dr. Self for final approval.

BIOL.07 – Course Number Change(s)

1.      To change BIOL 341 to BIOL 122 and BIOL 345 to BIOL 222 to better align the courses in their proper order to have a smooth progression of information from course to course.  It is to also alleviate confusion to students.

2.      Proposal was supported and forwarded to Dr. Self for final approval.

BIOL.08 – Course Deletions

1.      Deletion of BIOL 101:102.

2.      Proposal was supported and will be forwarded to Dr. Self’s office for final approval upon receipt of General Education signatures.

BIOL.09 – New Course

1.      To create BIOL 103 to replace the deletion of BIOL 101:102.

2.      Proposal was supported and will be forwarded to Dr. Self’s office for final approval upon receipt of General Education committee signatures.

BIOL.10 – New Course

1.      To create BIOL 104 to replace the deletion of BIOL 101:102.

2.      Proposal was supported and will be forwarded to Dr. Self’s office for final approval upon receipt of General Education committee signatures.

BIOL.11 – New Course

1.      To create BIOL 105 to replace the deletion of BIOL 101:102.  Need to be concerned about amount of sections offered because many different majors will require for students to use BIOL 105 as a prerequisite for other upper-level courses.

2.      Proposal was supported and will be forwarded to Dr. Self’s office for final approval upon receipt of General Education committee signatures.

BIOL.12 – Course Prerequisite Change

1.      To change the prerequisites for BIOL 341 from BIOL 121 and CHEM 102 to CHEM 102 and either BIOL 121 of BIOL 105.

2.      Proposal was supported and will be forwarded to Dr. Self’s office for final approval upon receipt of General Education committee signatures.

BIOL.13 – Course Prerequisite Change

1.      To change the prerequisites for BIOL 345 from BIOL 121:122 to BIOL 121 or BIOL 105 and permission of instructor.

2.      Proposal was supported and will be forwarded to Dr. Self’s office for final approval upon receipt of General Education committee signatures.

BIOL.14 – Course Prerequisite Change

1.      To change the prerequisites for BIOL 352 from BIOL 121:122 to BIOL 121:122 or BIOL 105 and permission of instructor.

2.      Proposal was supported and will be forwarded to Dr. Self’s office for final approval upon receipt of General Education committee signatures.

BIOL.15 – Course Prerequisite Change

1.      To change prerequisite for BIOL 471:472 from BIOL 101 or BIOL 121:122 and CHEM 302 to BIOL 105 or BIOL 122 and CHEM 302.

2.      Proposal was supported and will be forwarded to Dr. Self’s office for final approval upon receipt of General Education committee signatures.

BIOL.16 – Course Prerequisite Change

1.      To change the prerequisites for BIOL 481 from BIOL 121 and permission of instructor to BIOL 121 or BIOL 105 or permission of instructor.

2.      Proposal was supported and will be forwarded to DR. Self’s office for final approval upon receipt of General Education committee signatures.

BIOL.17 – Program Revision

1.      A program revision for the BA/BS requirements for Biology majors.  These changes reflect all the information changed in the previous proposals.

2.      Proposal was supported and will be forwarded to Dr. Self’s office for final approval upon receipt of General Education committee signatures.

 

C.     Chemistry & Physics

CHEM/PHYS.06 – Course Prerequisite Change

1.      To change the prerequisites of CHEM/BIOL 471:472 from CHEM 302 and BIOL 101 to CHEM 302 and BIOL 105 or 121.

2.      Proposal was supported and will be forwarded to Dr. Self’s office for final approval upon receipt of General Education committee signatures concerning proposals BIOL.08 and BIOL.11.

 

D.    Criminal Justice

CRJU.03 – Course Prerequisite Change

CRJU.04 – Course Prerequisite Change

CRJU.05 – Course Prerequisite Change

CRJU.06 – Course Prerequisite Change

1.      To change the prerequisite for CRJU 233, 235, 238 and 241 from CRJU 100 to no prerequisite for non-majors.  For allowance of all students to take the listed courses without having to have CRJU 100 first.  If student is a major, or plans to change major to Criminal Justice, then the student MUST take CRJU 100 prior to graduation.

2.      Proposal was supported and forwarded to Dr. Self for final approval.

 

 

 

E.     Music

MUSC.03 – Course Prerequisite Change

1.      To change the prerequisite for MUSC 102 from no prerequisite to Music major standing (MUS or PMUS).  Also additional notation that allows students from all majors to take course, but with permission of instructor.

2.      Proposal was supported and forwarded to Dr. Self for final approval.

MUSC.04 – Minor Editorial Changes

1.      To adjust wording in the catalog description due to recent deletion of three music concentrations.

2.      Proposal was supported and forwarded to Dr. Self for final approval.

MUSC.05 – Minor Editorial Changes

1.      To adjust suggestions for BA/BS electives in catalog description.

2.      Proposal was supported and forwarded to Dr. Self for final approval.

 

III.               Next committee meeting will be December 5, 2003 at 12 noon in the Business Conference Room in Martin Hall.
