Minutes November 27, 2001

I.                   Old Business

 

A.     ECON.01 – Proposal was previously tabled.  Members were reminded to bring the proposal to the next meeting for further discussion.

 

II.                Reviewed Proposals

 

A.     Minor Changes

 

1.      FORL.05, .06, .07- Course Credit Hour Changes

 

a.      Discussion:

 

1.       All three proposals need to include the new syllabi rather than the old syllabi.  Proposals were tabled until such a time that the department provides the correct syllabi.

 

2.      In addition, the proposal for FREN 320 (FORL.05) refers to the course being offered jointly with THEA 475, yet there wasn’t an endorsement from the Theater department.  Proposal was tabled until such a time that the Theater department also indicates their support. 

 

2. CHEM & PHYS.01 – Course Credit Hour Change. Change in credit  

    hours for PHYS 431, Energy and the ‘Environment, from 4 to 3.    

    Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President   

    of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

3. CHEM & PHYS.02 – Dual Listing of Existing Courses.  PHYS 498                         will now be dual listed as both as PHYS or CHEM 498. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

 

 

 

B.     Major Changes

 

1.      Foreign Languages

 

a.      FORL.08, .09, .10, .11, .12 – Course Deletions.  Delete FREN 203, FREN 319, FREN 370, FREN 318, FREN 450. Proposals supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

2.      Biology

 

a.      BIOL.02 – Catalog Course Description.  Changes in the course  

descriptions for BIOL 121:122, BIOL 101:102, and BIOL 111:112. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

b.      BIOL.03 – Course Prerequisite Change.  Remove STAT 211,

Biological and Health Sciences, as a prerequisite for BIOL 345, Genetics. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

c.       BIOL.04 – Program Revision.  Revising program to allow students who receive a B or better in a general education biology course, who are Biology majors, to substitute the general education course for all or part of the introductory biology requirements within the major. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

d.      BIOL.05 – Program Revision.  Add BIOL 345 - Genetics, to the Medical Technology core requirements. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

e.       BIOL.06 – Program Revision.  Establish a Biotechnology Concentration within the Biology major. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

f.        BIOL.07 – Program Revision.  Establish a General Biology Concentration within the Biology Major. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

 

 

 

g.      BIOL.08 – Program Revision.  Establish an Environmental Concentration within the Biology Major. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

3.      Chemistry & Physics

 

a.      CHEM & PHYS.03 – New Course.  CHEM 216, Organic Chemistry. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

1.      Special Note:  The Chemistry and Physics Department needs to submit a separate proposal to drop CHEM 416.

 

CHEM & PHYS.04 – Course Prerequisite Change.  Prerequisite for CHEM 416 will now be CHEM 216 instead of CHEM 102. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

b.      CHEM & PHYS.05 – New Course.  CHEM 403:404, Integrated

Laboratory. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval. 

 

4.      CHEM & PHYS.06 – Program Revision.  In the Bachelor of Science

(Non-Teaching) Degree in Chemistry, increase major hours from 37 to 39, and decrease electives from 22 to 20. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of

Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

5.      CHEM & PHYS.07 – Program Revision.  Delete the “With

Special Emphasis in Chemistry” option. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

6.      CHEM & PHYS.08 – Course Deletion.  PHSC 410, Science for the Elementary School Teacher. 

 

1.      Proposal was tabled until the Professional Education Committee endorses it.

 

7.      CHEM & PHYS.09&.10 – Course Deletions. PHSC 420, Electricity

and Magnetism, and PHSC 421, Comparative Planetology. Proposals supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

8.      CHEM & PHYS.11, 12, 13  – New Courses.  ASTR 421, Solar System, ASTR 422, Galactic Astronomy and Cosmology, and PHYS 421: 422, Electricity and Magnetism I and II.  Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

9.  CHEM & PHYS.14 – Program Revision.  Revision to both the Physical Science Minor & the Earth and Space Science Concentration to reflect changes and addition of new courses. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

10.  CHEM & PHYS.15 – Program Revision.  Deletion of the General

Science Concentration in the Physical Science Major and Minor. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

11.  CHEM & PHYS.16 – Program Revision.  Change of requirements for

the Earth and Space Science Concentration of the Physical Science Major. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

12.  CHEM & PHYS.17 – Program Revision.  Revision of the Physical

Science Major to reflect other changes. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

13.  CHEM & PHYS.18 – Course Credit Hour Change.  Decrease CHEM 201 from 5 to 4 credit hours; Decrease Chemistry 301:302 from 5:5 to 4:4 credit hours; Decrease Chemistry 401:402 from 5:5 to 3:3 credit hours. Proposal supported by UGCCRC and forwarded to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for final approval.

 

1.      Discussion

 

a.      A blanket exception will be done for all currently enrolled students majoring or minoring in Chemistry who has yet to complete CHEM 201; CHEM 301:302; and/or CHEM 401:402.

 

b.      The Chemistry and Physics Department needs to submit additional proposals to drop CHEM 422 and 418.

           

 

 

 

III.  Other business

 

A.     Next meeting on December 4 at 8 a.m. in the Business Affairs Conference Room.

 

B.     Members were asked to bring their final exam schedule to determine availability for the next meeting. In addition, we need to consider establishing a standard meeting time throughout the spring semester.
